Espoo International Film Festival is found in Finland EIFF

by Marianne Wi

Espoo International Film Festival is preparing for an influx of over excited cinema goers, they will be kicking off on the 19th of August, running until the 28th of August 2011. Espoo has a very exciting programme with great variety and, of course, they have chilled Snaps and Smoked Reindeer meat too, if you are feeling a little peggish. Finland is always ready to give Italy a chance, and although this Festival is relatively small, we have been well represented, lets hear it for the Finns Hip Hip Hurraa – Hip hip Hurraa, me rakastamme Suomi.

The films picked by our northern friends for their 2011 programme are:

Il ragazzo con la biciletta, The Kid With A Bike, Le gamin au vélo directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne do not miss this excellent film, well worth booking in advance and go easy on the Snaps.

Gianni e le donne, The salt of life directed by Gianni Di Gregorio. You loved Pranzo di farragosto, Mid August Lunch and you will love The Salt of Life as it flows gently past the fjords.

Hai paura del buio,  Are You Afraid of the Dark directed by Massimo Coppola, this has not been seen by us poor neglected habitants of Sicily, we await its issue on DVD.

Quattro volte, Le, The Four Times directed by Michelangelo Frammartino, another award for this film about goats ? I would not be surprised at all.

A great selection all round I think you will be impressed, there is also Espoo well worth a relaxing few days, the Finns are keen on their Designer Gear so do keep it smart rather than elegant and again get the Tricolor out,  casually attach it to your Vespa’s, as you arrive or throw it even more nonchalant on the back of the old yet shiny 500.

St. Peterburgs International Film Festival has not let us down

by Marianne Wi

June is the month in Russia for International Film Festivals, St. Petersburg International Film Festival kicks off on the 23rd June and will finish on the 26th June 2011, they are not as excited about Italian films this year as the Moscow International Film Festival also kicking off on the 23rd of June 2011, now the Muscovites who are positively drooling over Italian Films at the moment are screening 15 feature films and 2 documentaries whoop, whoop.

St. Petersburg is a must see if you are in those parts of the wood, stunning buildings, gardens, castles and Museums are all plentiful, do not forget the Film Festival, I said they were not over excited, yet they have found 3 feature films to screen so lets again rejoice and lets hear it for the  Петри and as always let show some style, lets leave a good impression.

Italian Films Are :

Baaria directed by Giuseppe Tornatore

Caravaggio directed by Angelo Longoni . TV will turned cinema, with great success

Le Quattro Volte, The Four Times directed by Michelangelo Frammartino,

This film is top of the league when it comes to Film Festivals and Awards for 2010, it has been shown at over 115 film festivals and it is still going strong, it has some 35 awards already and they will also increase as the year proceed. Yes, the film I did not like as I thought the continuity was terrible and I was bored and irritated because of it, I feel shame however I do always feel very very pleased for Frammartino though, it takes guts to shoot a film about old goats and a dying man, it has paid of and deservedly so.

Wisconsin Film Festival WFF

by Marianne Wi

Woooooher, Wisconsin Film Festival 2011 will be showing 4 Italian Films, please can we all rejoice together as neither San Fransisco, Dallas, Hawaii, RiverRun, Sonoma and Arizona International Film Festivals were able to find just one single Italian film this year, I think we need to go all out for Wisconsin lets sing a song, try a small tribal dance, anything to show some appreciation for our friends in Wisconsin. I was not really sure where this state was either so you now have a link to knowledge too, go explore.

They have found 4 Italian films to show during their festival, of course,  we have the Le Quattro Volte, The Four Times my life would not be the same if that was not included 2 x Hip Hip Hurrahs for the director Michelangelo Frammartino, who must be having the time of his life, not only does Le Quattro Volte get to appear in nearly all International Film Festivals, it wins prices and awards too, top film….. OK, I did not like it I was ever so bored I was wrong, as it has been applauded everywhere so go form your own opinion, do not huff like that in my direction, I am human and I have failed you all with respect to this film……. DARN.

Also shown are:

Mine Vagante Directed by Ferzan Ozpetek

Le Amiche  Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni

The Perfect Team Directed by Michael Rogosin a documentary co produced between Italy, France and the USA.

Italian Film Festival Scotland kicking off on the 1st April 2011

by Marianne Wi

Italian Film Festival Scotland is kicking off on the 1st April 2011 and will show some very exciting Italian Films until the 14th April 2011.  The Festival is as always distributed over 3 hotspots namely Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee, it is perfectly acceptable to turn up in all 3 Cities, do try however to sport new designer gear at each location, remember you are representing “La Bella Figura”, go easy on the “Tricolore” it can be perceived as tacky even if produced by The House of  Armani !

Lots of changes have appeared during this years Festival, it used to be run in conjunction with the Italian FIlm Festival London (re-named and now known as ” Italian Cinema London ” reasons are still unexplained although one could guess at internal politics and or inflated egos)

The programme is interesting without any great surprises, The Four Times, Le quattro volte, what is it about this film ? I found it so very boring, the goat was not even the same throughout, and I am flabbergasted that this slooooooow film showing goats and a Sheppard appears at every Italian and International Film Festival winning prices and awards too, WHY ? That said it is Italian and I am very pleased for Michelangelo Frammartino .

Films at this years festival are:

The Girl by the Lake, La ragazza del Lago directed by Andrea Molaioli

A Quiet Life, Una vita tranquilla directed by Claudio Cuppelini

One Man Up, L’uomo in piu directed by Paolo Sorrentino

The Double Hour, La doppia ore directed by Giuseppe Capotondi

The First Beautiful Thing, La prima cosa bella directed by Paolo Virzi

The Four Times, Le Quattro volte directed by Michelangelo Frammartino

Kiss Me Again, Baciami ancore directed by Silvio Muccino

Passione directed by John Turturro

The Passion, La Passione directed by Carlo Mazzacurati

The Sicilian Girl, La siciliana ribelle directed by Marco Amenta

We Can do That, Si puo fare directed by Giulio Manfredonia

What a Beautiful Day, Che Bella giornata directed by Gennaro Nunziate

General Della Rovere, Il generale della Rover directed by Roberto Rossellini

The Girlfriends, Le Amiche directed by Michelangelo Antonioni

I think you will agree  this is good entertainment all round, so get yourself organised and lets hear it for Italy.
