Trying to find anything remotely interesting to write about between mid June to mid September is like running two marathons a day, nothing is going on, nothing is going down. OK, so Woody Alan is busy in Rome filming his new film ”Whatever” who knows what he will call it in the end; Roberto Benigni has not yet started his part, I should imagine he has run off with Dante once he saw the full line up for the film, I hope he got a good deal out of Alan as this film will not do his street cred any good. The Venice Film Festival will start at the end of August, there are write-ups daily about it everyone trying to find a new fresh angle…..and failing, as the films are all having their world premier there is nothing out there to debate. So what pray tell is one to do ? Revert to gossip and beachwear or close down for the summer ? No, PrimoCiak was never a defeatist blog, if Italy is hot and full of a lethargy population, then it must be freezing somewhere else in the world, where perhaps a cool exciting winter film festival is being planned at this very moment….. off investigating whoop whoop the excitement is overwelming…watch this space !
Director : It is Francesco Dominedo first feature, he has previously appeared in a number of TV films here in Italy, will this film be his opening onto the International Film Festival Circuit? That is the million dollar question, as Italian films goes it is not bad, the editing is good, the camara work is well above average, usually the two immediate obstacles for success. The story line ? Well, there are so many sub stories going down, that you will need to be on full alert throughout. Matteo Branciamore (Manolo) was seen for the first time outside The Cesarone, he has turned ”BAD”. Also very good acting from the other 4, known for their TV work, so why am I not excited? Dominedo has tried to compete with the American Gangster Movies and although he often hits the spot, he fails overall possibly because of a low budget, it was released into only 5 cinemas in Italy so has not had a good start in life.
Cast: Matteo Branciamore, Stefano Sammarco, Christian Marazziti, Rolando Ravello, Alessandro Borghi, Lito Vitale, Massimo Bonetti, Angelo Orlando, Giorgia Wurth, Franscesco Arca, Francesco Venditti, Cladua Zanella, Loredana sofizi, Alessandro Tersigni.
Synobsis: We find our group of 5 in Quarticcilo east, a Roman suburb that lends itself perfectly to petty crime. Our 5 friends have all been to the same correction center or ”riformatorio” reformatory center, where they have served time for their senseless crimes. Our little group grow up, get married leading lives of petty crime until they decide to hit the big time with a large robbery… it worked and there was a bonus in the shape of a briefcase…… belonging the The Russian Mafia in Rome…..it is all very much downhill from there, as the 5 begin their fight for survival.
Elizabetta Canalis, who recently split from our aging, yet adorable love-boat George Clooney, has been living it up in Positano with her ”close” friend Angelo Vita from Naples, the Italian press are willing them on looking for a hot romance to mess with Clooney’s head. Actually, we are all feeling the heat and are all a bit jaded so any kind of showmance would be super duper, there are no Italian films at the cinemas in Italy during the summer months so lets see some action on the beaches. Great photos from CHI issue 29 as always.
I am not quite sure why people are surprised, George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis have issued a joint press statement stating that ” It is very difficult, it is very private, please leave us alone, it is all over”. The Italian press have run this story many times in the past and no one here should really be surprised, there are the usual innuendos about Clooney’s sexuality, do we really care deep down, whether he is in or out of the closet ? I know one thing for sure, he will be opening the 68th Vince Film Festival on the 31st August 2011 with his latest film The Ides of March whoop, whoop ! Who will he be bringing onto the red carpet with him ? the press has been full of lovey dovey stories about Clooney and Sandra Bullock of late, something that has coursed Canalis to go into a right huff I should not wonder, obviously no one else is involved in the split and they will always love and respect each other and never wash their dirty laundry in public, spoil-sports UFFA.
You look for love and support from you nearest and dearest in life as in Film Festivals, so scouring the Munich International Film Festival‘s program for proof that Italy was not forgotten, I felt a little unloved only 5 entries and one of them is suspect.
What did the wise Ladies and Gentlemen of Munich pick for their 2011 film fest?
Barnesy’s Version directed by Richard J Lewis. It has Italian money invested in it so I am claiming it for us, end off !
Il Castello, The Castle directed by Martina Parenti and Massimo D’anolti, not a film I have heard much about, it was seen at Swaziland’s Film Festival in April 2011 otherwise niente.
Et In Terra Pax, And Peace on Earth directed by Matteo Bofrugno and Daniele Coluccini
Corpo Celeste, Heavenly Body directed by Alice Rohrwacher, she will be receiving 12,ooo euros for the best new talent award ” CineVision Award” last year it went to Michelangelo Frammartino for the film ”Le quattro volte”, ”The four Times” they might not be drooling over Italian Films but they are putting their money where their mouth is.
La solitudine dei numeri primi, The Solitude of prime numbers directed by Saverio Costanzo, Pietro di Daniele Gaglianone
Not a kick in the teeth I grant you, yet I had hoped for a little more exuberance oozing from Southern Germany, close enough to smell our coffee, that’s all I am saying and just look at the love oozing from Moscow International Film Festival 2011.
Lampedusa a small Island of Sicily has had a visit from Angelina Jolie a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, who arrived in her private jet without Bratt, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox or Vivienne in tow. Bratt Pitt is currently filming his new film in Malta ”World War Z”. The visit by Jolie had been kept top secret, was she looking for another child to adopt or perhaps a new Villa next to Berlusconi ? No, she was paving her way to”Santa Subito” ”Fast Track to Sainthood” although she would have to queue behind Mother Teresa and John Paul II as they have not yet made it… Sorry, the lady is doing a great job and was on the Island of Lampedusa to meet with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, together they met with 130 specially selected refugees before going on the disused Air Base currently home to 265 illegal immigrants all underaged and all supposed orphans. The visit was to highlight the plight of refugees on ”International Refugee Day” I cannot help feeling that if she had donated the equivalent amount of money spent on her private jet to the camps on the Island, it would have coursed just as much publicity and would also have helped the poor mayor of Lampedusa Bernardino De Rubeis, who surely must be having a most miserable year. Angelina Jolie thanked the people of Lampedusa for welcoming the constant stream of immigrants arriving daily from Africa, Jolie also attended a service for 1000s of lost souls, who never made the crossing and were lost at sea.
PS : To Mark and Ellen fell free to comment directly on my post no need to insult me privately, I have nothing against Angelina Jolie, a great actress and anyone trying to improve the terrible conditions these poor ”boat people” are living under in the camps on Lampedusa gets my approval, I do find it abhorrent though, that a mega rich Hollywood Super Star arrive to visit the poorest of the poor in her private jet tasteless and all about publicity for numero uno with the odd orphan thrown in for good measure.
Daniele Pecci was out on the town this week with a blonde and it was not La Hunziker, he was papped strolling bold as brass around Trastevere in Rome before eating what might very well have been a romantic lunch, unless the young lady turns out to be a friend of the family. Meanwhile Hunziker has been adorning the Italian Magazines, who have described her as a ”lonely pensive figure”. Hunziker’s tour is coming to an end and she was recently seen to skip dinner with the rest of the members, in favour of at trip up the aisle at the local Basilica; an after midnight spot of sightseeing with her bodyguard Federico. La Basilica della Santa Casa di Loretor, is housing some very important catholic relics dating back to 1296. When not searching for God, Hunziker has been seen soaking up the sun with her ”driver” or Federico the ”bodyguard”. Hunziker has declared her self ”Happy and Single” I think you will all agree that she will not be alone for long. Wish I could get that Whitney Houston song out of my head…….
Giallo directed by Dario Argento was released in 2009, however it is only now being distributed into the Italian Cinemas (01.07.2011). I am still sitting upright at my desk expecting the worst to happen, phobias of which I had non are forming in the grey matter as I type. Whooorrrr a too graphic yet compelling watch, if you like Argento it is certainly worth watching, yet it is not quite up to his usual high standard and I am at a loss to understand why it took 2 years to be distributed to the general public, it is already out on DVD so it seems sort off pointless now, Italian distribution has always been one of life’s great mysteries. Giallo, does have quiet moments and does not always flow as well as it could have done, the unbelievable sub-plot, one about the Inspectors early life as a killer, covered-up by a passing policeman did spoil an otherwise believable storyline.
Director : Dario Argento, certainly one of Italy top directors in the genre of movies is famous for them outside Italy too, you often find Suspira 1977 on a list of “Top Ten Horror Movies” of all time, watch Gaillo and you will be scared, do not be embarrassed just hide under the desk or where ever you feel safe…that said it is not Suspira, so do not hold your breath.
Cast : Adrien Brody, Emmanuelle Seiger, Elsa Pataky, Robert Miano, Valentian Izumi, Sato Oi, Luis Molteni, Taiyo Yamanouchi, Daniela Fazzolari, Nicolo Morselli, Gueseppe Lo Console, Anna Carello, Lorenzo Pedrotti, Farhad Re, Barbara Mautino
Synobsis : Woman get into Taxi and is not seen again before turning up dead and mutilated in a Square in Turin, there are at least 4 known cases of this type of murder, that is the story in a nutshell. We follow first a Japanese lady, then and American lady getting into a Taxi and later we see some of the mutilations being done by a sexual predator and sadist, I think you will agree that he is a real badass. Inspector Enzo Avolfi is on the case helped by the sister of the American victim, there is a lot of blood and it takes awhile before we understand what Giallo is all about, it is all about the colour Yellow and nothing to do with a crime mystery as you might originally have suspected.
Out in the cinemas here in Italy on the 01.07.2011 and already out on DVD with English subtitles among others.
Rumors are running wild in Basilicata, well actually they are running riots in Hollywood, Paris and most of Italy too. The wedding of the year “mach 2” will take place in Bernalda, August 2011, preparations are on the way and I am sure the bridemaids are all to be found in a Gym doing Pilatus. Who is getting married? Well, the director of “Somewhere” last years winner of the Golden Lion, Sophia Carmina Coppola and her long time companion the French singer Thomas Mars from the indie group Phoenix, they have been together for 9 years producing 2 children. The knot will be tied in Bernalda from where her grandfather immigrated back in 1904, he incidentally invented the videophone that was patented and purchased by Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Sophia Coppola’s famous father Francis Coppola is one of Americas biggest director and producers, you are bound to have seen The Godfather One, two and Three, Apocalypse Now, Black Beauty and many others, he received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the ceremony of this years Oscars, Sophia comes from a sturdy stock of film makers, no one can argue with that. Sophia and Thomas visited Bernalda back in 2008 and it is understood that he asked her to marry him while inside Palazzo Margherita…..I know, who said romance was dead ? Palazzo Margherita was purchased by the Coppola Family many years ago and restored to the highest spec, a beautiful setting for a wedding ceremony, we know this as many scenes from “Somewhere” were shot inside the palazzo. Will the “I do” be said in the surrounding gardens to the tune of Lisztomania, I think that is a wait and see for now. There will be an influx of Hollywood stars, French stars and the odd Italian movie icon for sure, Nicholas Cage is Sophia’s cousin, Al Pacino a close friend of the family as is Steven Spielberg and Sly Stalone … what about Jackie Stalone will she be there doing her Rumpology readings after the service, I am sure the guest list will read like an international who’s who, I am getting excited and will have a look at eBay for that special hat, just encase .
Paolo Sorrentino’s “This Must Be The Place” was last night shown at Cannes to an entuastic audience, who reacted by giving the Director a standing ovation of 10 minutes, I am sensing a trend here…… 10 minutes being the operative word and norm. Sorrentino then had an additional 10 minutes when he arrived “embarrassed” according to the Italian papers, at the Grand Theatre Lumiere. I for one cannot wait to see this film with Sean Penn, who is one of my least favorite American actors, however the trailer looks awesome and I like the notion that Penn looks worn-out and haggard, do I see the Italian entry for next years Oscars? No it was shot in English and has too much foreign funding. This Must Be The Place was not released anywhere prior to the Festival and as far as I can workout, it will be late autumn before the rest of us less fortunate cinefiles get a look in. No release date for the USA, however as it has been partly funded by them it will be shown there I would imagine sooner rather than later. In Italy we must wait until the 14th October 2011 and the lucky Swedes will have it by the 11th November 2011. Cannot wait for the time when you go online ” pay as you watch” a film as and when you feel like it, surely not that many years away, we have the technology now we just need the humph.
