Marco Bellocchio to receive Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement

by Marianne Wi
Marco Bellocchio will be receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, at this years 68th Venice International Film Festival running from the 31st August to the 10th September 2011. I am sure he is delighted with this news in particular after his latest film “Sorelle Mai”, “Sisters Mai” flopped despite receiving an enormous amount of publicity, the public voted with their feet or rather with their bums lacking on seats. Marco Bellocchio was born on the 9th November 1939 in Bobbio, Northern Italy where he grew up, later moving to Milan studying philosophy, a study that was never finished.
Bellocchio’s film ” Pugni in tasca”, “Fists in the Pocket” was funded by his family and a mortgage on their home, it was released in 1965 and became a huge success, he followed this by directing a number of exciting films:
  • I Pugni in tasca, A Fist in the Pocket   1965
  • La Cina e vicina, China is Near   1967
  • Nel nome del padre, In the Name of the Father   1972
  • Marcia trionfale, Victory March   1976
  • Pianeta Venere, Planet Venus    1977
  • Il gabbiano, The Seagull   1977
  • Salto nel vuoto, A Leap in the Dark   1980
  • Vacanze in Val Trebbia, Vacation in Val Tribbia   1980
  • La condanna, The Conviction   1991
  • La visione del Sabba, The Witches’ Sabbath   1988
  • Diavolo in corpo, Devil in the Flesh   1986
  • Enrico IV , Henry the IV   1984
  • Gli occhi, la bocca,The Eyes, the Mouth    1982
  • Il sogno della farfalla, Broken Dreams    1994
  • Il principe di Homburg, The Prince of Homburg   1997
  • La balia, The Nanny   1999
  • L’ora di religione (Il sorriso di mia madre), My Mother’s Smile   2002
  • Buongiorno, notte, Good Morning, night   2003
  • Radio West   2004
  • Il registra di matrimoni, The Wedding Director   2006
  • Vincere   2009
  • Sorelle Mai, Sisters Mai   2010
Films not only impressive but also versatile covering many subjects, Bellocchio is a great film maker, who will not only receive the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, they will also show a director’s cut of the film “Nel nome del padre”, “In the Name of the Father” (1972) which will be shorter than the original by 25 minutes, unusual in its self I think you will agree, it would appear that he never really felt happy with this film, originally released lasting 115 minutes, cut to 107 minutes when it went Stateside, cut further when shown in Europe to 107 minutes, only now to be cut to 90 minutes, it has haunted this poor director for the past 40 years …Thank God Bellocchio will be able to set the record streight.
What are the future projects in the pipeline for Marco Bellocchio? Well, his next film currently in pre-production and due to be released later this year  “Lacrime”, “Tears” with a working title of “La monaca di Bobbio”, “The Nun from Bobbio” based on a true story from the seventeenth century, a noble woman is forced by her father to become a Nun, a life she is not taking to with ease, having a numerous lovers, very un-nun like behavior ending in murder and imprisonment. Enter our young priest with a tough decision to make, leave her to rot in prison or let her out, as decisions go they do not get much tougher. The rumours are rife but the information on the net is sketchy about this film however it is thought to be featuring Maya Sansa with whom he has worked before, I for one is looking forward to more information .
