Annie Girardot died yesterday in Paris aged 79 of Alzheimer. I know she is not Italian, I am making an exception for this great lady, who starred in many Italian films. Annie Girardot was easily recognised by her gravel-voice which got deeper as time went by, she acted in 160 films between 1955 and 2001.
I loved her in Rocco and his brothers Directed by Luchino Visconti, in which she stared with Alain Delon in 1961. Her last film won her a Cesar the French equivalent of the Hollywood Oscar for best supporting Actress in” The Piano Teacher” in 2001. Annie Girardot roles were often based on very strong women earning her a large female following, she wrote her autobiography while in the early stages of Alzheimer in honour of her daughter , she is also survived by her husband Renato Salvatori an Italian actor.
Also today in Hollywood another death that of Jane Russell 89, she stared in many movies back in the 40s and 50s and is properly best known for her role in “Gentlemen prefer Blondes” that also stared Marilyn Monroe. Jane Russell was a pin-up of her day and the first to make the push-up bra something a woman could be proud of, who can forget the Playtex bras for TV ads with the slogan Cross Your Heart, ….well just before we all decided to burn them that is .
